Venetian Tapestry Brocade
Designed by F. W. Plaistow in the 1950s, and quite different to the Portuguese and Verona but akin to the Aragon, the layout of this design is very linear. This points to the design's Venetian origins. A number of Venetian Artists of the 15th Century had a taste for reproducing patterns found in the classical architecture of ancient Rome. These can be found in the paintings of such artists as Andrea Mantegna and in wood carvings and inlaid marble. The presence of the Griffin is significant - in medieval Christian art, the Griffin denoted Jesus.
