Final pattern: a stole for our deacons

Deacons are an important part of the church. The office of the deacon was created to help and aid the pastors and other leaders of the church. To distinguish the deacon from others who serve in the church, deacons where a special stole – in a different way from the stoles worn by pastors and priests.

The deacon stole is meant to be worn on the left shoulder and comes together under the right hip. The stole may be a sash style stole or a mitered stole but the variations are almost limitless.

Our current deacon stole pattern is a mitered deacon stole style. We have made this style in silk and brocade fabrics. It looks and sews great in both fabrics.

Deacon stoles can be made from a stole kit, but it needs to be our special size stole kit. Thankfully, the silk stole kits come in two sizes to accommodate this need.

If you would like to make a brocade deacon stole, just contact us and we will prepare the proper size kit for use with a deacon stole.

It would be too costly to have pre-cut stole kits in all of the liturgical brocade patterns and size lying around; so we can just make up a custom order for the stole kit that is needed. All you have to do is contact us! Carrie will be more than happy to talk to you and get you exactly the right stole items as a custom order.

The deacon stole pattern is no more difficult to make than a pastoral or clergy stole. The deacon stole pattern has mitered seams at shoulder and waist. It uses two pattern pieces: one for the top and one for the bottom of the stole. There are also separate pattern pieces for the interfacing and lining. The pattern allows for a 5/8” seam.

And a variety of cross appliques can be used on the shoulder seam. Whichever cross is chosen, will have a prominent display when the vestment is worn. Tassels or fringe may be applied at the bottom of the deacon stole, just as with the clergy stoles. The choice is up to the wearer and seamstress or tailor.

So when you consider sewing a stole, we have stole kits and stole patterns readily available for you to start your project! We want you to make beautiful church vestments and paraments. And to that end, we are committed to providing materials for purchase, but the advice, encouragement, and helpful knowledge is something we will give you; all you must do is ask. Once you have the pattern—which has been professionally developed by our pattern maker—, you can buy as many stole kits and trims as you need to make as many stoles as you need. Thank you for reading and learning more about stole making and stole kits. #StoleKitFrenzy
